I don't seem to be able to send you a PM so could you please send me one and I will reply.
My questions are really about will it support upnp (dbpoweramp asset) and, if so, what app do I need to control it. I have a naim streamer which I need to send off for repair (the screen is wearing out) and I would like music while I wait for it to be fixed.

As your not familiar with the "Volumio" software here is the starter for you ...... I hope this provides all the basic info to you
- You’d need ethernet cable for the setup and basic router with ethernet out point.
- Connected the pi/R-2R to the router, using Etherenet cable.
- Using Network scanner in computer, find the Volumio IP Address , alternatively use Volumio.local/ to find the webpage.
- Copied it to the browser, then entered Volumio webpage / Settings mode.
- In the Settings mode, chose wifi network mode, select new wifi network (one from the provider, with pass).
-- Disconnected ethernet connection; closed web browser.
- Then Volumio visible in the iphone app or computer, communicating via WiFi. streaming/ working on Wifi.
- You’d need ethernet cable for the setup and basic router with ethernet out point.

After that I can login from a Linux box (I am running rocky 8, previously centos 7). I can control everything over ssh presumably.

Volumio is a Linux distribution designed for audio. I was surprised how easy it was to setup. (It was already installed and I just had to setup my own [free] account and tell it the names of the directories with my music.)
Probably starting with a bare pi would be more complicated.
Next thing is to hear it.
Think it's the modern version of the squeezbox.
