I would put them on the same level as the Beethoven string quartets Seán and they get better as they progress chronologically culminating in the last two wonderful works.Seán wrote: You obviously love these works. I should pay more attention to Shostakovich.

Re: What are you listening two?
I can offer nothing Seán as the Dvorak string quartets were never on my radar for some reason.Seán wrote: I really must get more recordings of Dvořák chamber music, this is great music. Any recommendations?

The Ravel and the Fauré string quartets certainly are wonderful works; I am delighted that you are enjoying them!

Re: What are you listening two?
I finished off listening to this box set with, amongst other smaller works, the following:
Violin Concerto No. 5
Rondo Concertante in Bb
Sinfonia Concertante in Eb
Concertone in C
Oistrakh plays very well and imbues these works with a sense of energy and forward momentum with others that I have heard do not.

Claude Debussy
String Quartet in G minor
Quarteto Italiano
What better way is there to celebrate Debussy's birthday than in the incomparable company of Quartetto Italiano. Fabulous music.

Wow, that is very strong praise indeed. I expect Chalkie might agree with you on that assessment too.fergus wrote:I would put them on the same level as the Beethoven string quartets Seán and they get better as they progress chronologically culminating in the last two wonderful works.Seán wrote: You obviously love these works.
