Bring out yer dead!

Post by Fran »

Literally....

I'm looking for some donor cases I can use to house some DIY projects in. So I'm wondering does anyone have dead CD players, amps etc sitting around, bound for the WEEE waste recycling but you didn't get to do it yet?

What I'm really looking for is the classic CD/amp sized cases (not the real slim DVD style ones), main body in metal rather than plastic*, doesn't matter about the front face. Think of the Marantz 5000 or 6000 CDPs, or really any of the older amp cases.

I will be gutting the inside, so if its any good, or theres any hope of you wanting to get it going again, hold on to it. This is literally for those things that are dead dead dead.

TIA,

Fran

* its not that I'm against plastic, just that when you take out the bits inside usually the plastic cases are very flimsy. Also, most of the stuff I use have power supplies that throw out heat, so the metal is handy here. Lastly, I can spray the metal a new colour pretty easily which improves the tolerance levels shown by my missus!! (not insignificant fact!)

Pity if you had posted this 4-5 weeks ago I could have supplied you with 2 pioneer cases(CD and amp) They were wee'd after spending a number of years gathering dust.

I have an old Myryad MI120 power amp that has been unused for several years Fran. The casing is reasonably slim. The body is black and the unit has a brushed silver front fascia. I'm pretty sure it still works although I havent turned it on in a very long time. I used it to drive two centre rear speakers so it has had little use. Anyway, its taking up space and I've been looking to get rid of it for a while now. You could probably gut the inside for some useful parts.

Thanks DaveF - very kind offer!!

I feel a bit bad about taking something that's actually working though. It would make a lovely case though!!

See what you think, only if you're absolutely sure you want rid of it.

Fran,
I'll take a look at it during the week. I havent powered it in almost 8 years I'd say so I've no idea if it still works.

Wow - that is too good to break up - I'll give you €30 and a full width Panasonic integrated (also working, but of somewhat lower quality!) that you can donate to Fran :D

..... and if the panasonic is still working, might be better giving that to someone as a working unit.

Something thats beyond repair but in a good case is what I'm after - see the worst part of DIY is the casework. Just a major PITA to get anything that looks anyway half right - I've been tempted more than once to use a USA biscuit tin as chassis!!!

Upturned roasting dishes are more widely used than you would believe for valve amps!

Anyhow, you get the idea.

I hear you Fran - what dimensions are you after? I have a storeroom full of old comms equipment at work and have used them previously for PSU cases previously (although most of my PSUs are still on chipboard!). Only downside is that they generally need spraying as light grey or cream seems the standard casework colour.

I can see if there is anything suitable.
