Would a tilt on the speakers affect the sound in any significant way?

Tilted forward = smoother sound
Tilted backward = brighter sound

I always thought that leaning the speakers back a little improved imagry? Admittedly that could mean "brighter" too. I've never heard of them being tilted forward.

I have my 989s on Cerebals and have the front set of feet on washers lifting the front, therefore tilting slightly back, and I thought the imagry improved a bit. Of course just putting them on Cerebals should cause that anyway so it's impossible to say for certain.

I kicked the leg forward a little so that the speaker can stand straighter with less chance of it falling forward. I don't think this is very likely with this design because most of the weight in the speaker is down low at the transformer box. I also made it a little taller, its now just a little shorter than my existing stands.

So I think I'll fire ahead and make up a set like this and see how she goes.

I have a good example of the Cambridge a&r a60 integrated, black wooden sleeve, phonostage, din inputs, in great nick, sounds superb, all pots quiet, no
crackling. Looking to trade it. Ideally I'd love to get my esl57s off the ground and up on some stands, so if someone wants to make me a set I'd be very happy...Here are some examples ;-)

As to vertical vs raked aspect of stands, back feet of my 57s were pretty knackered, which left them pretty reclined. I took recently the radical step of putting some paperbacks under the legs. This put them almost vertical, imaging immediately proved, albeit best when I sat on floor, hence my wont to lift them up on stands. There might be scope for an element of adjustability(?) in the rear leg if we could incorporate a spike there, could play around a bit with rake. Would make for more flexibility as regards higher lower listening position etc

RE: the rake of the back leg.

I'm thinking of putting in an adjustable joint there so that you can adjust this easily.

Made up 1 set tonight, but haven't fitted them yet. These are only in chipboard scrap so don't be expecting anything that looks good. Hope to fit tomorrow.

So here is one speaker fitted with the rough stands.

The main thing I have seen now is that I don't think the articulated back leg is going to work. Theres actually quite a bit of pressure on this joint, so I think now it would be better to make the leg solid, but go back to having a spike/threaded rod to adjust the forward tilt of it.

Secondly, there is quite a difference between vertical and reclined. Reclined definitely sounds smoother, and I can't comment for sure on the imaging (one quad is a bit higher than the other etc etc). However, I think maybe just a little back off vertical would mostly likely suit nearly everyone. If the adjustable spike works out, then like burgerking you can have it your way.

As regards general use, the stands are stronger and more rigid than I thought (and this is just chipboard, ply would be even better) and they are not inclined to tip forward, even when vertical. On the downside, I was used to the other stands which neatly hid the power and speaker cables. Those are back visible now again. On the upside, if you had monoblocks or something, you could easily put one on a nice little low table under each one. Something like the ikea lack table with the legs cut short might do.

I'll get working now over the next few nights on a proper set, and post more then.
