yes, eternal power should make a difference
were talking about two external supplies one for the usb port and one for the pci card

I know, it was a play on the word eternal which you used instead of external in the question above.

Nigel is correct.
The additional power (Molex or 2.1 barrel) is just for feeding the 5V in the USB not for powering the card itself.

If you want to use external power to power the card instead of the pci-bus then you would need to buy a riser card with external power. The external power of the riser will feed the pci-card but not the 5Von the USB.

Cheers

Yes, that's what I'm saying the weakness with the design - no option for powering the card itself externally (except DIY or riser card route). From all our experiments here, it would seem that PC PS is best avoided for sensitive circuits. Then again, Marcin & Josef may have tested this & it may not make any difference?
The JCAT raiser-adapter will be available soon! ;-)

My first assumption was that the internal molex is to power the card and the external 2.1 jack is for powering the USB's! Bad, bad me! :(

Your not joking are u
There's no reason they couldn't do it in the card

Maybe a jextention lead with 50 euro off too

Thanks Nigel, I'm flattered.....nobody took me seriously till now, but I'm joking! Actually, it's more like a funny-sad prediction!
The word is that they didn't do it in the card, because they left something for the DIY-ers to play with! There is no fun in just plug&play.

And, BTW, you are very optimistic about 50 euros!

thing is
the usb card itself is more than likely powered with 3.3 volts, difficult to find an off the shelf linear supply for that
and then still need a 5v external for the port

its likely only i that would consider such lunacy

For real lunacy, the 5V input to the USB device is usually regulated down to 3.3V on the device
So no need for 5V, really :)

John, are you saying that for the unmodified Hiface , or any other USB device, can be used anything from 3.3-5V?!

Well, no - I should have been more careful in my statement & changed it to say that some (not all) USB devices actual regulate that incoming 5V down to 3.3V (but this would need to be checked for the device in question). For instance an unmodified Hiface 1 uses the 5V to power the DIT4192 SPDIF transmitter chip - in my mods, I changed this to a WM8804 SPDIF transmitter powered by 3.3V.

I've looked at some USB sticks & a lot of them regulate to 3.3V on-board
