Enjoying your speakers

The room is not ideal yet as I am still a bit close to them but to my novice ears I think I have something good. Being honest the spendors were very nice with the jadis also. I will need to switch back to reassess at some point.

The speakers will take some time to "settle in" - the amp too I imagine. I know it's the black arts and grown men should know better but valve amps and electrostatic speakers are almost organic in the way they become unsettled when moved about.

You might consider firing them down the other direction in the room? Speakers at the window or opposite wall? That would give you more space.

Your spot Ivor, Sound getting warmer by the day. When fired up first they sounded bright a bit like the day when the telleriums and spendors met.
Intention is to do as you suggest eventually. Cant get to that position yet as there is too much stuff in the room.

I dont want to say too much yet in case I am made bring them back to Kettering. Suffice to say I am delighted. They have the OTA treble panels which are brighter and more detailed than the original quad panels. A few of us local boys marched on Tony's house last night for a quick listen to the Quads and Jadis and I have to say it's as good as it gets. Really nice insightful sound with no fatigue whatsoever. Great cake too.

Managed to snaffle a B&W PV1 sub today a bit battered but functioning. Going to try it out at some stage this week in conjunction with Pearse's PV1 which he kindly lent to me. I am really happy with the sound from these and Ivor sums it up nicely. I think these go fairly loud and Simon gave an AC/DC track a blast and it was as loud as one would reasonably go to. The trick with the 57's I think is to get them done. i.e either quad refurbished if they are 63's or newer or OTA for the 57's upwards. Noel Cloney kindly explained that most of the 57's and 63's out there are well below there best.They need to be driven harder as they wear out to get a decent volume level and this ends up blowing the panels. Mine have clamp boards so there is some protection. His advice was go for 57's but get them done. I am very glad I listened to that piece of wisdom.
Have a borrowed pair of supertweeters again from Pearse. We had to turn them up to full to hear anything from them. At this moment I don't see what they bring to the party. The sub is different there was varying opinions on it but I believe it integrates very well and adds something extra to the package. Any quad lovers who want a listen at some stage just give me a shout.

It was indeed a most enjoyable evening out in Tony's and I was most interested to hear how his refurbed Quads compared to me own. To make it extra scientific I shoe-horned my 57s into the car and we set them up in Tony's room. Our findings tallied with expectation: they sounded good, but down on output compared to Tony's refurbed pair. An interesting experiment in many ways. Also interesting was the use of the sub, which I never thought would integrate as well as it did. As usual, there were some great tracks played, and I expect my amazon basket to have a few additions shortly.

I can also vouch for the standard of cake.
