I have just purchased the Brahms piano pieces you mention and the Grieg Cello Sonata is very high on my Amazon wish-list of future purchases... lovely, varied selection from you there.... ;-)
Hi Jared,

Nice to see you too. I plan to make a come back on Tir Na and am looking forward to read all your future posts.
You must tell us which version of Brahms piano pieces you purchased and what you think of them too. I love the piano
and Brahms Op.117 and 118 have a dear spot in my heart.

Matt.

A difficult question, but a few pieces spring to mind...

Vaughan Williams - Tallis Fantasia & Symphony No.5: 3rd Movement
Ravel - Piano Concerto in G major: 2nd Movement
Beethoven - Symphony No.9 Choral: 3rd Movement
Sibelius - Karelia Suite: 2nd Movement

I absolutely agree with that one Darren. Quite a few people miss that movement because of the monumental work that it is in and the last movements seems to overshadow all that preceeds it. It is one of my favourite movements in Classical music and is one of the tests that I use when determining how well I perceive how a conductor interprets a Beethoven cycle.

Hi Matt,

I do like the Julius Katchen I have heard in this repertoire, and have splashed out on the Decca 6CD boxset, which hopefully will arrive before I leave Norfolk on Thursday!

Vivaldi Nisi Dominus 4, "Cum dederit"

especially when sung by Andreas Scholl on this, one of his best records:

Debussy: String Quartet. 3. Andantino, doucement expressif

...but it needs the right performance. I listened to the Belcea Quartet last night and their slow movement left me unmoved. I like the Orpheus Quartet on Channel Classics
