Speaking of listening too loud...



I absolutely love this album. You'd think I'd favour a smaller, more intimate approach to this music, but these performances are unashamedly large scale. If the crescendo in the Duruflé Sanctus doesn't raise a goosebump then there's no hope for you!

Yes Simon, many moons ago you recommended that I get those recordings, I have yet to do so, perhaps I should.

To my great surprise Veronica loves this music and has had me put the first disc, containing the first five sonatas, on repeat play on every afternoon for the past few days, we never tire of listening to Ms Pires.

'not like' might be too strong a term...

The Haydn & Mozart really are super.

The Purcell isn't as immediate as his other works; a little more of an acquaired taste, although pleasurable.

I don't think anyone can say the the LvB Oratorio is top notch repertoire. It's a good performance, but as a work, about as successful as Fidelio, and simply nowhere near the same league as The Creation or The Seasons...

The Rameau is admittedly hard work... I've heard it 3 times through now, but its a slightly different soundworld and its never going to make the hairs stand up on the back of my neck. Its overly long for me, and doesn't really hold my attention.

Interesting as The Fairy Queen was my introduction to Purcell back when that recording came out and I loved it from the moment that I heard it.

I honestly do not know the work Jared so I cannot comment on it at all.

Rameau certainly is a unique sound world and that is what I find particularly attractive about it. I like that he sounds different in his own way as does Lully for that matter now that I think of it. I can understand that if you find the sound world a bit of a push for you then you will find his full length works trying. Perhaps you should introduce yourself to the Suites instead; they would be an easier listen for you.
However, credit is due to you for both trying and persisting!!
