Some of the foam in my REL Subwoofer has degraded, I emailed REL and they said the type of foam used is Open Cell Foam.
From looking up the web closed cell foam is easily bought online.
Does anybody know places who sells foam? At least I can ring and ask about open cell foam.
REL SUBWOOFER FOAM
Re: REL SUBWOOFER FOAM
Is this the foam loose inside the cavity of the box?
Do or do not, there is no try
Re: REL SUBWOOFER FOAM
No, the foam (medium or high density open-cell foam) is stuck on with 3M 77 spray adhesive (REL's suggestion) to the inside of the subwoofer at the top. I have attached a photo (the best I could do). I opened up the subwoofer because the volume pot was noisy so I wanted to clean it, then I noticed some of the foam had fallen off and was lying on the bottom of the subwoofer. It was very brittle.

Hard to see on that photo, but it looks like the egg crate type foam often used to line inside speakers. Last time I bought some for my current speakers I got it from France, but I was buying drivers from the same company. You might be able to get it cheaper if you shop around.

Not sure if the egg crate foam is permeable though and the second link there seems thinner than your picture. You might get lucky in a furniture/upholsterer if you knew what you were looking for.

Re: REL SUBWOOFER FOAM
Thanks for all the info, from what I can see the foam is about 3'' thick. I am not hearing any deterioration in the sound of the subwoofer.Fran wrote: ↑Fri Jun 04, 2021 10:40 pm Hard to see on that photo, but it looks like the egg crate type foam often used to line inside speakers. Re: REL SUBWOOFER FOAM
I've just checked RS Components and I saw this type of foam. It looks like it could do the trick, has an adhesive back on it and it is for sound insulation. What say you?

Re: REL SUBWOOFER FOAM
Here is a photo of open cell foam (top) and closed cell foam (bottom). The open cell foam is the top one and looks exactly like the foam in the REL.
