Phono box.

Post by PatD »

I have a Rega amp and a Planar 3 turntable. Would a phono box improve the sound of the vinyl music? Cheers.

The short answer is yes and the other short answer is "it depends". :)

I'd say the phono stage of your Rega amp is absolutely fine and does a perfectly good job but... you could probably improve the sound by adding an even better dedicated phono stage which of course would be still of use should you ever upgrade from your current amp. Personally I'd spend the money on more vinyl until the itch got so bad it just had to be stretched!
Vinyl -anything else is data storage.

Thanks for that.
I am actually itching to improve my system.
I have the Rega stereo amp and the Planar 3 table.
My speakers are Focals. Could l improve my set up by adding another amp?
Cheers. Or just go out and buy more vinyl??!!

Which amp is it? The Brio?

There's no doubt you could improve the sound with a "better" amp or turntable ("better" is in the ear of the beholder) - this is true of every system everywhere! All your components are good ones. A significant improvement will involve a significant investment!

I'd suggest you have a browse on Richersounds.ie or HiFi Hut for amps or even an upgrade to your cart or speaker cable. Small improvements can be the most satisfying.

Upgrade the amp
Add a dedicated phono stage
The cartridge
Speaker cable.
Look at cheap isolation - cork sanding blocks under the feet of amp and turntable.

What cartridge are you using with your Rega 3, moving magnet (MM) or moving coil (MC) ?

It’s a moving magnet cartridge.
