RespberryPi and Squeezbox - advice please

Hello All,

I have been running SqueezboxServer for years on a QNAP box but I updated the QNAP firmware recently and it all stopped working. Apparently the SqueezboxServer had security problems so QNAP disabled it. I have a few options (according to the web) ..

a) Go back to an earlier version of firmware on the QNAP (I am going to try this but not sure I have access to a really old version)
b) Reinstall SqueezboxServer as a Docker/Container (I tried this but my QNAP is too old to support this)
c) Get a RaspberryPi

I have had a quick look at this third option. I have no problem with unix/linux but if I get one do I need a htmi monitor? Can I just switch it on and plug it into my network and see it (via linux) or do I need a monitor? Also no idea which one to buy. (I have a hdmi TV but not a hdmi monitor).

I am running Win-7 dual boot with Centos-6 so I am happy with unix.

PS The ideal option is to get back to an old working version of the firmware but I need to do lots of backups first.

you can run the raspberry pi in headless mode, though for 1st setup it may be handy to use an hdmi port on your tv. I have also used an hdmi to vga adaptor on mine

You can use the Pi headless or connect it to the TV when configuring if you want to be sure it's booting correctly, setting initial ip address etc.

If you want to use it as a squeeze box server I can highly recommend picoreplayer. I've built a system for my father using upto 3 pi's. A Pi 3 running as the server connected to a NAS, and an IQ audio DAC, which is an expansion board for the Pi. With 2 other Pi's and DACs with picoreplayer installed and running a squeezelite player.

Picoreplayer is all configured via the browser interface and once you've written the SD card, you can get it up and running in under 30mins it even handles mounting the NAS share, which has caused me problems in the past with previous Pi distributions.

I have a Squeezebox Touch but I am currently building a touch screen box with a Raspberry Pi3 + Luckit WaveIo + Volumio
I'll let you know of my findings within few weeks :p

Thanks for the advice. I should probably get a hdmi to vga connector if I go the raspberry-pi route. I have not done anything yet since I still want to try resetting the QNAP to an earlier version of its firmware.
Not 100% sure which model of raspberry-pi I would need. I assume I need a) raspberry-pi, b) power supply and c) memory card? Then I connect the raspberry-pi to my network and start installing the operating system and then the squeez-server software.
