Re: Cloney Audio RED K SPEAKER DAY – JUNE 7TH Anyone goi
I managed to pay a visit today, saw Ivor and Mick with whom I had a quick chat.
The Red 50's where downstairs by the window in the front room, Micromega CD player and Naim amplifier. For their size the 50s are very impressive, great sound, detail and control.
Upstairs in the back room where the Red 100's, Naim CD and Naim amplifier in use. Prototype speaker stands by Russell K in use here also.
What can I say.... sonically these speakers are exceptionally good, most impressive, and again one other impressive point... The prices I felt were particularly, particularly keen. Given the price of Stg vrs Euro, I felt the prices for both were very good indeed.
Last but not least meeting Mr Russell Kaufman was most enjoyable, a very informative gentleman with a vast wealth of speaker knowledge from various manufacturers under his belt. Russell was giving demos, answering questions and came across as a chap who you could spend days talking about Hi Fi and still have more insights to offer.
Well done to The Cloney gang, Noel, Ivan and Mark for the time, effort and hard work in making what was a very enjoyable day indeed.
If you are interested in a speaker change, and in particular to a bookshelf / stand mount speaker type then the Russell K's are a must to audition.

Thanks for the write-up. Any idea what Naim amp partnered the 100's.

Agree with the above assessement. Well worth going along too and, as has been said, the 50's downstairs were especially impressive given their compact size and the fact that they were (according to Noel) set-up quickly with the minimum of fuss on a pair of Partington stands. The room itself is not exactly ideal, what with the big window, shiny surfaces and TV screen on wall etc., yet they sounded incredibly engaging with little if any wayward reflections or boominess, even at a fairly high volume. The selection of music played (Shelby Lynn, Mark Knopfler, some jazz and classical, revealed them to be good all-rounders.) Upstairs, the 100's were in a more hi-fi friendly room with carpets, drapes, leather sofa etc, and they too were hugely enjoyable with a wide sound-stage, great detail/imaging and generally great presentation with a range of music.
Russell himself was very knowledgeable and informative on the subject, and eager to please as far as volume and music selection was concerned and he was particularly good at answering any questions and explaining things without getting too technical.
(Hadn't seen Noel C for a few years and he seems to be getting younger!)

I can only echo the comments above. Very nice speakers with plenty of weight and body. Downstairs Noel played some familiar Shelby and Atkins & Knopfler but also some lively Liszt which tested the speakers dynamics and transient response - they passed with honours! Upstairs Russell himself demo'd the larger 100s with Holly Cole, Lyle Lovett and a few other randomers... as mentioned he was happy to chat about speaker design, placement, bass ports and their wily ways and whatever else came up. Nice to meet a guy who was happy to let his speakers do the ultimate sell.
Thanks to Ivan Noel and Mark for their hospitality and indeed I'd repeat the observation that Noel is looking younger than ever!
Always good to meet a few familiar faces too.... as important as anything else on the day!
in short if you're looking for well priced well built speakers these should certainly be on your list to demo.

@ Sloop,
I'm not familiar with Naim gear, so I'm very much open to correction. For the Red 100's I think it was a Naim CDX2, the disc tray was a hinged type drawer and a small puck was placed on top of the disc.
The integrated amplifier...I don't know what it was, however it did have two round dials on the front, like the Supernait 2 amplifier, but I thought the dials were on the right of the facia. Not sure, all pics on the www show the dials on the left.
For the Red 50's, I cannot remember at all the type of Naim amp used there.
