Bootable Linux USB stick?

This question may be (1) idiotic or (2) already covered in other posts but is it possible to create a bootable Linux USB stick so that I could run my computer for music replay? Would a Linux OS 'see' my Windows 7 directory structure and hence my music files or would I need a separate hard disk drive for Linux files. The hard drive on my computer is about 500 Meg and I have slightly over 100 Meg free space. I could get a larger hard drive if it were possible to move my OS and files to it. Guidance is clearly needed guys and maybe some hand holding while I learn the system. Volunteers ?????

well we were calling it the gateway drug on sunday
will certainly suit some people that arent particularly looking for the bleeding edge
more like ease of use, sounds better than most players and its free

Can't get mqn to work on my nuc with the Hugo at the moment, so Daphile is very handy! And it sounds pretty good too...

Thanks Nigel. From my researches I have concluded that Daphile works on a computer that is connected directly to the system and not as mine is [via a Sonos or Squeezebox wireless connection]. I have a volume control 'box' and am looking out for a computer that would run Daphile. Then a DAC, one of John Kenny's most likely, is needed and I am up and running. Steep learning curve? It is almost vertical but that is how it is. I will contact you when the required hardware has been sourced.

Claus, I saw your mini computer at Frans on Sunday. Impressive to say the least. I sent you a PM about this. I gather you were occupied on other demanding tasks. In your own time...... Thanks.
