I feel your pain.....

there's still (despite the plethora of new coffee shops and chains) only a handful of places doing great coffee

3FE, Cup, some Dunne and Crescenzis,

worst offenders? Insomnia....
Brass Bands are all very well in their place -
outdoors and several miles away....

I actually think Insomnia are "better" than many of the other chains, although they go through long stages of burning the s**t out of the coffee. You can be lucky, though.

But yes, I agree with you.

they specify a burnt profile on the beans and then deliberately have the water too hot to burn it further.... it gives the coffee a strong taste but I find it undrinkable.

That exactly describes the Insomnia coffee I got on Monday this week. I assumed it was because the dude serving hadn't a clue what he was doing and had drawn the short straw for the bank holiday shift, but maybe it was meant to taste like that. It was, as you say, undrinkable.

But I drank it anyway.

Edit: Sorry we didn't bring you coffee, k99_64. I drank a Coffee Angel flat white especially for you.

that my issue with insomnia; they have a solemn responsibility as a large indigenous chain of coffee shops not to make coffee which tastes like a horses arse ( by all accounts a horses arse tastes like coffee beans roasted to a point just shy of miniature barbecue charcoal )

Get an Aeropress. The best filter coffee I've tasted and all you need is hot water, decent fine ground coffee and your trusty aeropress. Takes a few minutes to make a cup and 30 seconds to clean. A marvellous thing. I must create a new thread later....
