Mark Knopfler
Mark Knopfler
Crackin' gig by MK in the O2 last Wed. Played Les Paul, Strats, Tele, Electric Hawaiian, Martin Acoustic and that chrome National steel. Stellar band, 5of 7 members have their own albums. Included folk legends Mike McGoldrick and John McCusker (ex-hubby & producer of Kate Rusby) and pianist/accordeonist(?) Matt Rollings, who is producer & bandleader for Mary Chapin Carpenter. Sound in O2 better than I thought. Packed too.
Re: Mark Knopfler
Glad you enjoyed the gig Raymo :-)) You're obviously a fan!
Re: Mark Knopfler
Yes, I was tempted by that concert, but ended up not making it.....
Great to hear that it was worth it...

Re: Mark Knopfler
I have to say I wasn't quite as impressed as others. I thought that there was a decidedly shaky start with the first six songs. It was only after the first two Dire Straits songs did it settle down. MK and rest of the band then put on a very polished display.
Clearly MK was not in the best of health and the concert seemed to reflect this, being noticeably low on energy but high on virtuosity. His hand picked band were of a very high standard, but only hit their emotional stride a good hour into the gig.
Sound quality was good, but the guy on the desk had MK and his guitar way too low for the first third of the gig and missed picking up the flute/fiddle at key points.
6/10 from me.
Setlist:
Border River
What It Is
Sailing to Philadelphia
Prairie Wedding
Cleaning My Gun
Hill Farmer's Blues
Romeo & Juliet (Dire Straits)
Sultans of Swing (Dire Straits)
Donegan's Gone
Done With Bonaparte
Marbletown
Speedway at Nazaret
Telegraph Road (Dire Straits)
Encore:
Brothers In Arms (Dire Straits)
So Far Away (Dire Straits)
Piper to the End

Re: Mark Knopfler
Yep, agree re MKs health (voice-mabe a chest infection) and the initial mix. Did think band gelled & hit their stride earlier than the DS songs. Tight & well rehearsed. Bookended by 2 standout trax from "Get Lucky" - "Border Reiver" and "Piper to the end" (what a great song/arrangement). Bit more than 6/10 in my view. Points off for the constant in/out movement of the hungry/thirsty/prostate gang- it was like the footy internationals at the old Lansdowne Rd- and for not playing "Our Shangri-La"
I go to lots of these & felt I got vfm

And one guy in front of me had to be helped out by the order of Malta too. Cheek.
Actually, the O2 is very bad for pedestrians during the show. I can't understand why so many people were walking around having paid good money, I'm sure a few were bursting after a feed of pints, but it seems 20% of the audience meandered out during the course of the show. I couldn't believe people would CHOOSE to walk out during Sultans of Swing too, I'd have crossed me legs, put a knot in it and burst before I'd walk out on that song live!!!

aaah, I've bitched endlessly about this in the point. It is just soooo annoying to have the constant stream in and out to go piss or smoke. Bloody tourists.
