Using Sony BD PLayer for DAC....???

Post by jaybee »

So I noticed yesterday that there's a USB port on the front of my Sony BDP-S370.... (I'm not one for "features"... mostly play rewind stop!!)

A tiny bit of digging reveals that you can plug a USB drive into this as long as it is FAT32 formatted... and according to Sony: Audio D/A Converter 192kHz / 24bit

Has anyone here tried this out as a method of improving iTunes playback in a non-critical hi-fi setup....

I'm fairly ignorant when it comes to computer audio.... ie can toslink convert to USB....?? can a Mac output audio over USB...??

or are you limited to the BD player as the interface with your files on a HD...??

T'would be a nice wife friendly development if it works like I hope!

p.s. it seems limited in playback of lossless files however.... unless LPCM is lossless (I thought PCM was CD format..?) the manual says it doesnt support apple lossless which most of my files are :-(

So I've tried everything can think of at this stage.... much googling would suggest that it will play wav files at 24/192, but the only troubleshooting I can find is in relation to video files via the USB... everyone else seem to play music files no bother....

I have limited the folder tree to two levels... artist>album>track

I have tried wav mp3 aac all to avail, the bdp reads the folder tree perfectly but says "no music files"

anyone have any suggestions while I await a reply from Sony?
