Review: Mundorf M-Cap Supreme Silver Oil Capacitors

Post by sdiesel77 »

Hey Guys,

I just upgraded my tube amp (Double mono KT88) with 4 new capacitors Mundorf Supreme Silver Oil 1uf 1000v and was thinking that it would be good to share a little feedback on them. :)

Technical specifications (according to manufacturer): "The MCap® SUPREME silver/oil is an oil impregnated metallised polyprophylene dielectric capacitor. As the name indicates, high-purity silver is used for the capacitor coating, and the winding is impregnated with a special oil developed in an exhaustive series of experiments and listening tests. Both these features contribute to an even fuller and smoother tonal richness and diversity. Our state-of-the-art metallised polyprophylene foils make it possible to maintain extremely low production tolerances that cannot be achieved with traditional oil/paper capacitor designs. This is also the first time that the benefits of oil-impregnated capacitor design have been successfully combined with the well-known long-term stability of polypropylene foil and internal series wiring for induction-free SUPREME performance. Its lively reproduction of music impresses in particular with its subtly dynamic speed, precision and marked fine detail."

The Sound: Very smooth and EXTREMELY detailed ! Very defined bass and not "boomy" at all.
As they are in the amplifier for less than 60hours and as it is recommended to wait AT LEAST 300h for a proper running-in, the sound is still slightly "clinical" but it's improving everyday ! :)

Update: They are now fully run in and the sound is just Magical! Deep, precise bass and so much more detailed than with my previous caps ! Love them ! :P

nb: Please note that if you wanna give a try with them for your own amp, take in consideration their size coz they're huge !

I know those Mundorfs. You're right they are HUGE! I was sorely tempted a while back to replace my speaker's ancient crossover with Mundorfs etc. After roughly working out the sizes I came to the conclusion I'd have to do up an external crossover as no way would it have been possible to fit them all in on the board! So, for once, I decided to leave well enough alone :) BTW well done on a lovely job. Hope they sound brilliant by 2112 ;))))
