CD Review on 18th Feb: with JSB's Goldberg Variations on BAL
What's your favourite version of the Goldberg Variations?

Re: CD Review on 18th Feb: with JSB's Goldberg Variations on
that's an interesting one Sean; I won't be able to listen to the programme, so please do post the outcome for us.
of course, there have been many, many versions over the years; possibly Bach's most often recorded piece for harpsichord. I own:
Glen Gould (1955): Piano
Freddy Kempff: Piano
Trevor Pinnock: Harpsichord
Catrin Finch: (Arr for) Harp
and I have Angela Hewitt's version in my sights.

I will of course. I LOVE CD Review, I rarely miss it and that is an inspired choice for a BAL nomination, let's hope that the first choice is a worthy winner.Jared wrote:that's an interesting one Sean; I won't be able to listen to the programme, so please do post the outcome for us.
Perhaps you might consider Gustav Leonhardt?of course, there have been many, many versions over the years; possibly Bach's most often recorded piece for harpsichord. I own:

interesting. Fergus and I discussed his version recently, when he was playing it, as it would be interesting to compare his against Pinnock's. Certainly, I do admired Leonhardt's conducting of Bach, especially for the time... I guess I'm just up against the question 'how many Goldberg's do I really need?' I got rid of Jeno Jando's set recently.Seán wrote:Perhaps you might consider Gustav Leonhardt?

^^ wow! that's certainly a whole lotta harpsichord for the money...
Re: CD Review on 18th Feb: with JSB's Goldberg Variations on
Well, my mulling has been extensive! Actually, there are only two or three others (actually four) and not one of them is an organ piece!Jared wrote:I have this feeling you'll be posting that sentence in quite a few threads between now and then... ;-)Diapason wrote:Funny, this was another one I was mulling over for June...

Re: CD Review on 18th Feb: with JSB's Goldberg Variations on
Just saw this -- I have set my FreeSat recorder. Thanks !!
[I really like the Goldberg and a version I would recommend is ...
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Goldberg-Variat ... 386&sr=1-5
Not 100% sure this is the version I have -- the cover on mine is quite different -- .. but my version is on Tomato Records ..
There is another version I don't have either which has a stupid price ..
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Goldberg-Variat ... 628&sr=1-2
Martins plays then on the piano and it was the second version I bought ..
a) first was naxos -- could not understand the fuss about the work -- no feeling [IMHO]
b) second was Martins -- super
c) third was Edith Picht-Axenfeld -- 2cd's and harpsichord -- also super [wanted to try harpsichord]
d) fourth was Gould [his second version] -- also super [bought it second-hand]
e) fifth was Gould in mono [his first version] -- super [was a fan of Gould at this stage]
[Bought the Martins and Picht-Axenfeld from Tower when they were in Georges St after a fire? or flooding ? in temporary accommodation -- both were quite cheap]
