fatman itube
fatman itube
has anyone tried one of these?would a itube drive my royd minstrels?how is the bass on them?thinking of getting one as they go cheap now because they have a new line out and always wanted to try valves....
Re: fatman itube
I do indeed....
Can highly recommend one (at the right price obviously...!!!)
I am using it as an ipod/airtunes system in the kitchen, driving arcam muso's with qed micro speaker cable and I must say I was more than pleasantly surprised right out of the box...
I was going to set it up with airtunes running lossless files into my audio alchemy dac, thence into the fatman, but to be honest I am happy with the sound and it's discrete dimensions at present that I'll probably leave it as it is....
To answer your question I am very happy with the bass, now obviously it's not going to be plumbing the depths of audible sound! but that said it is impressive enough paired with the muso's for my taste... It certainly outshines the zeppelin soundwise... more cohesive in the midrange and less laddish bass
The build quality is excellent also, not the highest quality components I've ever seen... speaker terminals are a little lightweight, and the source selector switch is a little spindly, but the volume pot has a nice positive action, and the chassis is heavy gauge and well chromed....
advertised power is 13 watts into 8 ohms, however since early 2008 TLA upgraded them to 25 wpc, but weren't that interested in recalling all of their marketing blurb as they had a load of new products to promote so didn't really tell anyone(it's obviously done in the solid state end of things as the pre valves are the same which is plenty to fill my kitchen (5m x 4m)
Sound is cuddly and cosy, which is exactly what I wanted, as I found the muso's paired with my primare amp to be strident, and harsh...
and being from TLA it has fairly impeccable british audio design in its bloodstream... think of it like the cheaper B&W speakers, all of the know-how and important bits high-quality, then built offshore to keep it cheap...
This little fella has good synergy with the speakers and removes all edges of any poorly ripped files
the 2x6N1(ECC85) and 1x6E2(EM87) -- which would be my only gripe with the unit..... it serves no purpose whatsoever... it's basically a left-right balance and current indicator, essentially it's a valve version of those ridiculous -- to my mind -- visualisors you get on aftermarket car stereos -- luckily it only kicks in at a certain volume in my system so most of the time its just a greeny blue glow
Highly recommend one...
although I can't comment on the dock... I got one sans dock as I wanted it slimline to marry with airtunes... I just use the apple universal dock
