That's a genuine modern masterpiece, Sean. Only Suttree comes close in McCarthy's output, in my opinion. As much as Hermann Melville is the guiding stylistic influence in Blood Meridian, William Faulkner's influence looms large in Suttree. Both books deserve to be read and re-read.
I will read Blood Meridian again, it is an extraordinary piece of work. I read Suttree a long time ago, I will read it again, it did not make the same impression on me as Blood Meridian, perhaps I read it at a bad time. I read The Road (didn't like it), No Country for Old Men and the Border Trilogy (including the Pretty Horses) and enjoyed them too.

Heavy Hand... Sunken Spirit... Mexico at War..by David Rochkind.

ISBN 978-1-907893-24-7

"They tore him apart and killed him worse than they would kill a dog"

'I saw it when they shot him in the head and it shocked me. Ever since, I take pills to go to sleep.'

These are the voices of the victims of the violence in Mexico. It's been this way ever since Felipe Claderon became President and began a policy of waging war against the drug cartels, ushering in an era that will forever be remembered as the 'six year term of the dead'. his declaration of war was born the moment he sent the army to fight. When that happened, the criminals came out of their hiding places, bringing their battles to the streets as they marked their territory and showed their power. The war quickly spread like a disease, extending into many regions in the country. It was as if a killing machine had been activated, producing an endless series of dead bodies without stopping, and without logic. It was as if hordes of killers were let loose on the streets to eviscerate other human beings and throw their bodies away like garbage. The country became a shooting range with a bottomless mass grave.

Little or no words... a book of photographs.................... last few pages with a caption of what each photo is about.

In conclusion... a humbling read / look / observation.

Whistleblower, Soldier, Spy..

A personal account of one man's odyssey from life as a Irish Defence Force Officer in Lebanon, compiling a doctorate on bullying / discrimination in the Irish Defence forces to a career in Journalism commenting on the GWOT (Global war on Terror) with trips to Guantanamo, Syria, Landstuhl, Bessbrook Mill, Lebanon, Bosnia.

I found this to be a very good book, most interesting and insightful with a personal look into Tom Clonan's family life as well. Well worth the read!!!

@ K99_64..

I cannot honestly remember..... as it was last June / May... nearly a year ago now. It could have been when I was perusing a photography forum website and I picked up the link.

The book is for sale on Amazon.co.uk ... link here..

http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_nos ... ico+at+war

Or it could have been listed on a site called... http://www.powerhousebooks.com

I have a look at that site every now and again...... they have a kind of unique perspective on what they publish etc

You are getting in some good reading there Fergus!

I'm currently in Shredded, Inside RBS, the bank that broke Britian by Ian Fraser.

It's a good read, detailing some truly ignorant and financially dangerous people, explaining various concepts of Global finances i.e. Basel I, Basel II, etc... Greenspan's world view, Financial Services Authority UK etc

It wasn't just little old Ireland that got it wrong... it was the entire global financial system. Easy to read and not afraid to call a idiot............ "an Idiot".
