A great idea Fergus. My knowledge of Classical music is slight but I am willing to listen and learn, so count me in.

Thank you for the encouragement Dermot. It will be interesting to see how it develops.

Another approach may be worthy of consideration: one person picks a piece of music, and within an alotted timeframe we all report back on the favourites or otherwise in our collections. Just a thought.

For example, Vivaldi's 4 Seasons:
The performances in your collection; those you like and why; those you don't like and why and your overall favourite(s) and why.

Ok, just to get this thing rolling, I am going to suggest that for the month of February we will discuss Vivaldi's Four Seasons. So, unless anybody has any objections that will be be the assignment. I think it should be an interesting one because it is a work that everyone "knows".....or do they? It is also a work that polarises opinions so perhaps it will generate some lively discussion.

So, dust down your Four Seasons recordings and start studying. I will start a new thread just for that work so that should people want to use our discussion as a reference it will be easy to find.

I am looking forward to it!

I think that's the right choice, and a very good place to start. I have 2 recordings of that, but haven't listened to either in years. This'll be good.

Ivor: Fergus has cast his bait... to reel in as large a school as possible at the start; then by the time we get to the Trout Quintet, you'll be hooked and landed before you can get away....

so, let the shoal commence... :-)
