I'm open to correction here but... "master tapes" were much larger and seemed to be almost metallic. The reel to reel tapes I've seen (not that many) have been 1/4 inch or 1/2 inch. The master tapes that studios ultimately record to look to be about 2" wide.

So size matters. Interesting.
