A Beethoven, Mahler or Sibelius symphony perhaps?

^^ that's a very good idea Fergus... I'll be happy to participate as and when work allows me to, and as long as it isn't French... ;-)

You will be more than welcome to do so. You may be surprised at what you already know Ivor.

I have nothing specific in mind at the moment but I thought that perhaps that we might start with something very well known just to get us into the swing of things and also because I would like to start off with something that everyone would have in their collection. I also think that it is important that everyone should have something to say on the first assignment; whether they actually like the work or not and more importantly, why?

Things that would immediately come to mind would be:

Vivaldi: Four Seasons
Bach: Brandenburg Concertos
Mozart: Symphony No. 40

....stuff like that. I am easy about this but I would just like to get everyone involved at the very beginning.

If anyone has any other suggestions please post them.

I like those choices; I am a bit inundated with Brandenburgs and could use a break from them in all honesty. I would still contribute to any discussion if this were a preferred choice for others though.

I am instantly drawn to the Mozart option personally Fergus. What do others think?

I like all three choices even if I only have the first 4 brandeburg concertos (I would put an emoticon who is ashame here if I could) but could easily find the last two online somewhere.

The Mozart Symphony no. 40 has the advantage to be shorter in length than the other two. So for a first, it might be a good idea. We could come back to the other ones later as well.

Matt.

I'm easy on the subject, however I think what would be a very good idea is that each of us take a month...

starting perhaps with a communal piece in February, to get us started...

March could be chosen by Fergus, who should be allowed to choose any piece he so desires, then be fresponsible for getting the discussion under way by leading the ensuing discussion with his initial thoughts, maybe by preparing a couple of background paragraphs, when he mkes his selection. then Matt, Sean, Darren, Simon, Dave, Klaus, myself and others could take a subsequent month each, make the choices and be responsible for starting of the thread and if necessary bringing the conversation back in focus....

what do you think?

I agree Jared as I was going to suggest something along those lines later on in the process. My priority here would be to get and to keep everyone involved.
