I found the sound of Animals always disappointing if compared with TDSOTM and The Wall. This version fixes the problems imho. Really a great sound for a great record.

Here’s my take on firstly the remix and secondly remixes in general. Before I start I never had a problem with the original Lp UK edition of ‘Animals’. It sounds of its time and so it should. This new 2022 remix on a very cursory Side One listen seems to be clearer with better separation etc etc. A kind of a 21st century version of a 20th century recording. When I say a cursory listen I actually mean that unless I hear a clear perceived ‘improvement’ I lose interest half way through. In that moment I realise I’m not enjoying the music so I put it back on the shelf for another day when it’s forgotten about. Then with fresh ears and diminished noise I listen anew. If I still find I have to strain to hear these ‘revelatory’ mixes I just enjoy it for what is, a spare copy of a classic. I haven’t done that just yet but I will.
As remixes go I have no qualms at all as long as I possess another copy as close to the original as possible or even a reasonably good sounding reissue. However I can understand why people don’t like classics being tampered with under any circumstances. I always say if you already have an original then don’t fall for this overcrowded remastered or remixed nonsense that’s currently littering the shelves unless, like me, you’re more interested in the bonus material on offer.
Then we have this AI scenario which is scary enough though I only have one example which is ‘Revolver’ by the Beatles. The fact that it sounds amazingly good belies the fact that an awful lot of forensic tweaking took place over a long period of time. Is this the way it’s going to be in the future? Entire catalogue’s in AI form? More box sets? Will the ‘kids’ even notice? Does it even matter? Thoughts please…..

Thanks for expanding the discussion. I don't believe "remasters" in general are good, and I also had bad experiences and decided to keep my original copy. Also, how and when we first discovered a record will leave a deep impact on us and we will never forgive any attempt to modify that sound, no matter how bad it was.
For Animals I know it was mixed in a completely new studio (Britannia Row) and it is possible that things didn't go as expected. But it is also possible that they wanted a more claustrophobic sound. I think the work done in this remix is respectful of the original one, because it has been mixed by the same person and all the band agreed to that. And to me it finally unleashes repressed emotions.
Another interesting operation for me is the work done on the King Crimson record "The Construction of Light". When it was time to remaster it they couldn't find the original drum tracks. Mastelotto used only an electronic setup at the time for logistic problems (not for a specific sound decision). So in agreement with the band he decided to re-record all the drum parts, this time using his full acustic-electronic setup. Well the new record now has a different sound and though I liked the original one, this one is generally more enjoyable for me.
I close with a remix that I didn't completely appreciate: Pearl Jam's Ten. The Brendan O'Brien remix is more forward, but it is still very compressed and my ears start to suffer after few tracks.
I would be curious to listen to the remastered versions of two of my favourite records: Joni Mitchell's Shadows and Light, and REM's Automatic for the People. They are two good records, but they could be really grand after a wise remastering.
