the return of the infamous compact cassette

Post by Brutus1968 »

We are all witnessing the unexpected revival of the compact cassette. And watching new records, now available also in this format, exposed in the windows of the record stores , puts a bitter smile on my face.
But I am realising now that there are persons who are selling their old used tapes (that have been stored unused for years in the worst environmental conditions) for 15-20 euro each. And I feel sad for both the sellers and the buyers.

I still actually play and record onto cassette but the junk listed on Adverts makes me laugh. 'Vintage' 'Original' 'Rare' used to describe lp's and tapes that I wouldn't look twice at, never mind the silly prices being asked. At least with lp's it's easy enough to gauge condition when looking at it. A good clean usually sorts most reasonable condition records into playable condition, but used tapes are impossible to check without playing them in full. Glad I picked up some new old stock sealed cassettes years ago before the Great Unwashed got it into their heads that they might be worth something.

I think I'll stick with my Sony Mini Disc if it's needed at all! (only used these days for ripping old MDs to the hard drive)
I wouldn't encourage the return of cassettes at all!

My fully serviced Nakamichi CR7 would respectfully disagree. Awesome machine.

I don't doubt it but I, like many, have no interest in cassettes.

You know, I read this thread and thought "zero interest in cassettes", then I went to my parents' house and found a tape of a concert I had attended that got replayed on the radio and that I then recorded. I'd actually like to hear it again. Joke's on me, I guess.

Don't suppose you've any way of capturing it digitally, bod?

Thanks for the link, I enjoyed the article. And naturally I have a big poster of the Maxell advert...

I never actually tried. Kept meaning to figure it out. I did learn how to use a 2-inch 24-track machine, but Audacity just baffles me :-).
If you know how to use it or have a digital recorder you're more than welcome to pop up and give it a try. PM to arrange if you like. Cheers.
