The 10,000-dollar first prize went to Swedish composer Kurt Atterberg for his 6th Symphony, which has borne the sobriquet “The Dollar Symphony” ever since. Many factors contributed to its success, including its transparent orchestration, euphony, engaging melodies, rousing dance-like music in the outer movements, the poetic mood of the central Adagio (with its rewarding clarinet solo), and a hint of Swedish folk music.
And the runner up was Franz Schmidt with his Third Symphony, and yes, I too, do prefer Atterberg's Sixth Symphony to Schmidt's Third.

That said this is a great recording, I'm loving Järvi's work:

I am currently exactly half way through listening to another JS Bach Organ Works cycle. This time it is Bram Beekman:

Telemann: Flute Quartets [Musica Antiqua Koln/Goebel]

Image

I have been dipping in and out of this set over the last three days.
I have always liked the music of Telemann. I particularly like how he wrote for various combinations of instruments. I like the sonorities offered in such music particularly when it is so well played as here.

As a result of struggling with Chopin for over fifty years here is one more Chopin LP from my collection that has been consigned to the Charity Shop Donation Bin.

Now that’s what I call a rather unusual sleeve!

Yes, a bit different all right. You may or may not know that there is a large body of work by Telemann called Tafelmusik and this may, or may not, be a clever nod in that direction.
