Dead tweeter

Post by dhyantyke »

I haven't been listening for quite a while...events etc.
I just plugged in and find the one tweeter on my B & W 802 diamond speakers is not producing a sound. All connections and cables seem to be okay. Is it a question of replacing the tweeter (600 +) or is there another possibility? any suggestions welcome

A bit strange, for a tweeter to stop working, just like that, what does mean quite a while?
Did you check the internal cables and connectors?

Have you swapped left and right at the amp end to make sure it's definitely the speaker? You probably have, in fairness. Are you biwiring? Any chance of a connection problem at the amp side?

Clutching at straws in the hope it's something simple!

Many thanks for the feedback.....I will work my way through those suggestions slowly again & let you know if there's an update...

"quite a while" is like many months. Though in fairness I haven't been doing any close listening i.e. in the same room so it could have been offline for a while without me noticing.....

Hi All & thanks again for the feedback.

Apologies for delay in updating, but

It's only today that I've had opportunity to explore what my problem might be.

I'm using Classé mono blocks with these speakers. So I changed all cables from one side to the other. While I was doing this I also tightened the tweeter "screw" at the back of the tweeter unit, and possibly made extra sure of speaker plug-ins etc.
Result....sound coming from the tweeter!......
Wondering if I had gone mad I continued switching cables around, amps, speaker & power. Still getting sound...so far so great.
Wanted for swmbo to come home & had her check the tweeter...sound confirmed....(I was seriously doubting myself at this stage)
Then I put everything back as before.
All good. The only thing I notice is that the tweeter output on the left channel is definitely stronger than on the right...even when I switched channels from the cd player side.
Any thoughts?
Anyway, it sounds great if I can get the niggly thought that there may be something wrong out of my head!.....(placebo effect I guess?)
Obviously from the above, I am an ignoramus on the tech side...& wouldn't feel capable of taking a screwdriver neat anything tech...so apologies for any obvious nonsense above!

Thanks

For future reference... I had a tweeter go in one of my B&W CM7 loudspeakers, I rang Cloney Audio and they ordered one for me and I was able to replace it myself. I think it cost around £40!
