Forum Music threads suggestion.

Post by Sloop John B »

I’ve asked for this before to no avail but sure times change.

So I’m here listening to a Sugar Pi de Santo compilation from ACE of her Chess sides. Really enjoying it and I’d like to share but, is it rock, probably not, soul and funk, well close but no, blues err no, ah feck I’ll post on pink fish or Naim instead.

Can we please have just one non-classical what are you listening to thread?

I have the vague memory of trying this before only to find people made an extra effort to post in the individual music category threads. I’d like to see if there is any point in trying again. I do think it’s madness to separate music genres like this but I know this is not a universally shared opinion.

I don’t post too much music here so the opinions of those that do would be welcome.

I think this proposal came up before and the argument against it was that with the genres separated like it is now it is easier to search through one of those threads if someone wanted to get some ideas for some Blues recordings or Jazz or whatever. When it's all in together that's a bit more difficult.
However, we don't have much participation in the listening threads as it is so if a generic catch-all thread encouraged folks to post more then I'm all for it.

I'll be honest, I kinda hate the genre thing but I get that it might be useful to split them if we had multiple pages of posts per day. At this stage, I think one "anything goes" thread would probably be just as useful. However, I know that my way of viewing the forum ("unread posts") is not the same as others, who might go to specific subforums.

Still though, I say have at it.

Oh this topic rages every 10 years or so... even Classical Music has a second thread now - as I understand it. In my experience it simply makes things easier to find. Not everyone who is interested in Folk wants to wade through Country and so on. It's no big deal.
I know at home I divide my vinyl and CDs by genre, and it makes sense. For the record (unavoidable pun) I put my Sugar Pi de Santo recordings on the blues shelf and never worry about it again.
Vinyl -anything else is data storage.
