Turntable wanted

Post by maxx3f »

Hi all.
New to the site and just looking for a bit of gear and advice.
I am looking for my first turntable and not sure what to go for.
My budget is around 200€ collected.
I was thinking rega planar 3 that may need some work or something cheap, vintage to be heavily upgraded (I can fabricate the plinth myself).
Thanks for all sugestions and offers in advance.
Max

Have a set of b&w dm601 speakers and mint yamaha cd-s300 for trade if there is anybody willing to trade.

Thanks for the link.
Richersounds got it even cheaper.
199€ posted as boards.ie special.
I was strongly advised against it by my friend who knows way more than me about tt's.

That's a cracking deal, you can't really go wrong with an entry-level Rega.

Unless you want to do a lot of tweaking, and even then unless you know what you are doing with t/tables you may end up with a worse result than the Rega (plug and play) option!

A friend who knocks a new Rega for €200 doesn`t really know anything about turntables if you ask me!!! Ha :-) (The arm alone is worth €200 all day long...imo). If you`re Dublin based and need help getting it up and running give me a shout.

You're absolutely right there. A solid bargain.

Hi lads.
Thanks so much for the advice.
Maybe my friend is a bit of a snob and thinks that Im one too ;-).
Or maybe he based his advice on the rest of my system.
I was looking at some reviews and few mentioned not accurate / stable rpm.
Im based just around Enniscorthy, so thank you kindly Bod for your offer but I am rarely in Dublin these days.
If I ever take you up on the offer I can return the favour and colour calibrate your pc or laptop :-)

No worries Max.
We`re all snobs here! Regas always run slightly fast - since day one. Depending on the material this can be good or bad. An external power supply is key to speed stability in my experience - no matter which turntable really, for the most part. Rega do their own but its about the same price again as the deck. Well worth trying to find a second hand one at a good price (€100 or so). Make sure you can fine tune the speed with potentiometers. That way, you can get it as close to 3150hz as possible with the deck :-).
A bodge solution if you were to even notice this would be to use some tape (with a bit of a tack for grip) around the circumference of the subplatter. By fluting around with this (layers of 0.2mil maybe?) and the help of a strobe you could get it to run a but slower - if you could be bothered!. Consistency is more important than accuracy in my opinion, so unless you`ve got perfect pitch and the record is utterly centred I doubt if you will notice really.
Best, Dave.
