City Slang celebrating 20 years and have some nice releases from Lambchop and Calexico

Splashed out for the Lamchop box set which is made up of cds they only sold at gigs. I have a couple already which are great. Let you know at the end of the month when I get hold of it. Also ordered a copy of Nixon on vinyl. Postage rates seemed to be ok for 2-3 items,

As near as I can get to the excellent "Appointment with Mr.Yeats" in the Grand Canal Theatre last night. Totally blown away by it. Album due out in September 2011. Gonna be a long wait! :-(

Dave: You asked me about this Lp, so very briefly here's my opinion: Buy it :-) Seriously though, it's a wonderfully intimate live recording in a small venue (5000 seater) and the Doors are very much alive and up close. They, especially Jim, sound like they really mean business.This remember was a while after the Miami debacle and with the whole world watching and the threat of not getting paid (!) hanging over their heads they got down and ran the Blues down :-). Read the little piece below and while it's a wee bit over the top it's mostly all true. The actual presentation is jaw dropping and really, for the vinyl fanatics among us, it's an absolute joy to hold....
Technical notes: It says on the sticker that it's a direct to disk master; What this means however, is, that it's transfered from the 8-track 96 kHz Protools master directly to the lacquer master.They say that by using this method they are able to avoid a digital generation, thereby improving the overall spatial and frequency response as well as the transients and attack timings...............and no, it doesn't improve the actual playing :-)

Featuring the complete first show of the band’s four-gig, two-night stand at New York’s Felt Forum in January 1970, Live in New York finds the legendary Los Angeles rock band in peak form, with singer Jim Morrison’s singing in exceptional voice and focused on the tasks at hand. There’s no evidence here of the buffoonery that occasionally plagued his appearances. Moreover, there is no better-sounding live Doors document in existence. Cut by Bernie Grundman from the highest-resolution masters and pressed at RTI on 180g virgin vinyl, this is a sonically spectacular experience.
Credit for the incredible fidelity also goes to original Doors engineer Bruce Botnick, who meticulously restored the original eight-track open-reel tapes. The eye-opening results are on par with the Doors’ magical chemistry and driving hybrid of rock, soul, blues, and psychedelia. Outshining the studio versions, takes of favorites such as “Roadhouse Blues” and “Soul Kitchen” positively burn with excess energy and fiery vibes. Covers of standards like “Little Red Rooster” and “Money” show the Doors in absolute control.
Just as importantly, Live in New York is a unique cultural document in that it marks Morrison’s last-ever concert appearances in the city. The Doors could be erratic onstage, but this night found them at their most spirited. An unbelievable combination of unforgettable music, extraordinary sound, and wonderful production, this 2LP gatefold set also includes Botnick’s notes on the original recording and cutting process as well as a 12x12x4 panel insert with liner notes from the CD box set. Time Fades Away. Young's most under-appreciated masterpiece. Wonderfully heartfelt songs like Journey Through The Past and The Bridge. One day he'll do the decent thing and issue it on CD. (I hear it's going to form part of the next Archives box. It's about time.)
