Cartridge repair

Post by tweber »

Lads, any recommendations for cartridge repairs? A friend of mine has a Supex SD 900 mc on an lp12 but recently it started giving sound from 1 channel only. Tried different amps and problem remains. Flipped interconnects and opposite channel works. We reckon it's the TT or cartridge but any other thoughts appreciated. Thanks.

Check if it's the cartridge by switching the cartridge leads (carefully) left to right. White is left +, blue left -. Red is right +, green right -. If the problem shifts channels, it's the cartridge. If not, check the arm leads.

Thanks Terry. Will pass the advice along. He's trying a few things tonight I think so hopefully will get sorted without too much effort.

Exactly as Terry says - swap headshell leads as well. If the cartridge is on a removable mount (or not) try it on another turntable.

I've recently had very good experience with the guy below in retipping/repairing a B&O cart. He wasn't dear and had reasonable turnaround time but don't expect much conversation! Lots will recommend exact stylus in the UK, but last time I checked they had a long wait time.

Quick update, looks like it's a preamp problem and not the TT after all. Thanks for the help lads, a few handy links for future use though :-)
