Couldn't resist - picked this up today

Post by Fran »

Saw this on adverts.ie. Couldn't resist. She's playing away at the moment and actually sounding very good. The phonostage is well better than what I was expecting. Beautifully made, in typical Jap fashion. First impressions are that its not quite as neutral as the valve pre I normally use, but on the other hand would appear to be a bit more dynamic and forceful.

Not bad for 75 blips. He had a cassette deck for sale too, not that I have enough of them for the 2 tapes I ever play (roll eyes) but it just looked lovely.

Anyhow, whats this thread without pics!!

Build quality is very good for its time. Noble brand pots, polystyrene caps, good quality switches, transformer in a nice sheild, and then another metal shield all around the raw power supply.

Closer look:

See that blue strip in this pic? Well thats actually a selection mechanism!! There is a metal strip inside the blue plastic cage. When you turn the selector, the metal moves back and forward to change the switch located out in the middle of the PCB.

She'll do MM (with variable capacitance and loading), MC (no much options), plus 4 other inputs. rumble and treble filters, loudness, balance and a stereo/mono switch.

Looking forward to playing with this baby!!!

I think I had wanna dem in the late eighties as a kind of 'stop gap' amp (between an A&R Cambridge and an Audiolab if memory serves). I have fond memories of it but in fairness I was only learning about hifi at the time. Akai, Trio and Kenwwod were all reliable and respected brands at that time.
Vinyl -anything else is data storage.

Thorens TD124 Mk1 + Kuzma Stogi 12"arm, HANA Red, Gold Note PH 10 + PSU. ADI-2 Dac, Lector CDP7, Wyred4Sound pre, Airtight ATM1s, Klipsch Heresy IV, Misc Mains, RCA + XLR ICs, Tellurium Q spkr cable

Have fun Fran :-) BTW what is it about the beauty of amplifier innards? That was always the first thing I ever did when I got an amp home - whip off the cover(s).Incidentally one of the most beautiful innards I ever saw was underneath the Croft Series 5 power amp; such beautiful work in such a tiny space :-) That selecter switch is nifty too :)
