Any 16gb that you can recommend?nige2000 wrote:Lower is bettersima66 wrote:How about low latency vs non low latency RAM?
Would that make difference?
Is faster
Having it isn't enough it needs to be set in the bios

Well I'm likely the only one that's not a fan if ram os vs clean powered USB or ssd as I noticed loss of resolution reverb and micro my gut feeling us that were asking too much of the ram and its too busy
Anyway low voltage ram cl9 or less at 1600 mhz I like Kingston ram they have not sent me faulty ram yet ;)

They're faster, timing is 8-8-8-24.
They were the least expensive 16gb cas8 I could find.
Haven't tried playing with different voltages and timing yet, but they worked fine when I plugged them in
But, in hindsight, wondering if I should have bought the lower voltage version though.

Re: How would you build your music PC today?
I use exactly those low voltage modules and can recommend them. They are very stable and can be pushed to very low timings when downclocked.
I actually will probably buy another set of those to bring me to 32gb RAM to have more space for music in RAMos.
Still very tempted to try Xeon and Intel board which supports PPA CF... but then I would end up with 3rd PC which I would not need... hmm... If I wait a bit longer they intel board will go off production and problem will solve itself ;)... yeah lets wait a bit more with this decision ;)
Cheers

Seb, what board are you using now?
Any clocks changed? :)

Re: How would you build your music PC today?
I use one of the boards modified by PPA. It is Gigabyte H87 chipset with one TXCO clock. I do not think he sells them anymore as now H97 is the more current one.
I was mislead by photos on his webpage on which he was using this particular board with his CF card reader while in fact the photos were made only for demonstration purposes and those boards never worked with CF reader... which I never thought of asking about as I assumed that if he is showcasing his PC with CF card plugged in then it means it actually does work :D. Well I was mistaken :)
Never the less I am happy as it is again very stable motherboard not causing any abnormal behavior.
I have to buy some 3m EFI /EMI sheets and try experimenting with them but I am waiting first for final decision with which motherbaord and solution I will end-up as final.
I have PCIe SATA controller which does support CF card reader but it does not have W2012 drivers, always something in the way, there might be a way around it but did not experiment with it yet too much.

Re: How would you build your music PC today?
The PPA MSI H97M-E35 mobo with TCXO clock is on the way.
I never asked is it ready to go, or I will also need to do something "out of usual"?

Pretty much ready to go, just connect it up like shown on his website and forget about it.

Thanks Pearse,Sligolad wrote:Pretty much ready to go, just connect it up like shown on his website and forget about it.
When I looked at PPA page I thought that the separate module clock is only if you buy the clock separately! I somehow assumed that the mobo with clock that he sales is one piece......maybe because I watched Nigel doing it! :)
Paul recommends, on his site, his 5V PS for clock module! Isn't the clock at 3.3v??!
