Vinyl Distortion

Post by DaveF »

Gentlemen,

I'm having a small issue with my vinyl setup. On the odd occasion I'm getting some brief distortion in the high frequencies during playback. Usually it only occurs with vocals particularly during big transients. Has anyone encountered this before? I've checked cart alignment and it looks ok. The setup came with a protractor so I was able to check that. The one thing I cannot verify is tracking weight. Does anyone have one of those little mini weighing scales that I could borrow?

Perhaps the distortion is on the vinyl itself but from memory I dont think it occurs at same the point on the record so I think the record itself is ok.

Any thoughts or suggections most welcome.

Hi Dave

Does sound like it could be tracking. I borrowed a simple Goldring Scales from Noel in Cloneys about 6 Months ago. If your in the area I'm sure he'd oblige.

I have a scales and the feickert disc if you want to borrow both to check. Its either mistracking due to some kind of misalignment/VTF or else damaged vinyl.

As you say though, if its damaged vinyl it would always be in the one spot.
