Thanks for that Gerry; leads to some nice links so I have bookmarked it for reference.

Thought I'd throw this one up - I did some shots of my daughter for her confirmation day...

Beautiful shot there Fran, Congratulations on Fiona's confirmation as well, another mile stone reached!!

Interesting back ground effect... bokeh? What lens / camera system were you using?

Reminds me of a lens made by Fuji... 56mm APD which has a filter inside to produce a bokeh effect.

There is quiet a contrast between the red jacket and the green / purple surround of the foliage in the photo, almost surreal in fact, a bit like a photo was taken, and then Fiona was painted onto the image. Fairly striking as well.

I think the crop of the photo just above Fiona's ankles works very well, the proportions of the photo seem right here. With models.... or taking a model type photo... the placement of the hands is important, the hands here are rather neutral, quiet natural. Might be an idea to have Fiona holding a bouquet of flowers for the next photo, props so to speak. The facial expression is good... a kind of Mona Lisa mystery to the smile.

However the focus for the day is on the event.. not necessarily the photo shoot.... it can be quiet a challenge to get a good shot set up when the main focus is on the day itself, where the girls all want to run off with their friends / buddies and do their own thing, not be listening to some old crank with a camera. Crowd control and what not!!

Very good shot Fran. I also really like the background - isolation of subject via colour contrast works very well. Lovely lighting too!

Thanks guys,

the lens was the one below - Helios 40-2, its an 85mm f1.5 lens that gives that swirly bokeh up to about f2.8 or so. You have to get the background right - specular highlights etc, and the distance from subject to background is important too.... but when it works, its very effective. I had it on a Canon 7d - my current digital workhorse.

I did the shoot well in advance - no hope of doing that on the day!! I shot a few, her favourite is one where she's sitting down on a log in the same location.

I was away on a photo trip last weekend.... magic of Italy.

That is, without doubt, the best shot I have ever seen of that particular view Fran, no exceptions!!

Great shot of Venice there Fran.... reminds me of 'Don't feed the Gondolas'!!

May I ask how did you produce the out of focus effect of the Gondolas?

That Helios seems like a lot of fun!!!
