My young lad and I cooked our steaks and chicken etc under showers of hailstones on Saturday and torrential rain on Sunday, 'tis a real Irish summer if truth be told.Jose Echenique wrote:fergus wrote:markof wrote:
Required to offset an atrocious wet and windy June 1 morning in the Lower Harbour.
A brilliantly vivacious recording - lovely balancing of the mandolins with organ and violin on this record.
Great fun overall.

The weather is not much better up here in the Dublin Bay area Mark but a great idea to import some Mediterrean sunshine to brighten up the day. Great music and music making there!!
Seems everybody in the forum is "enjoying" foul weather. Hail storms here in Mexico City!

Re: What are you listening two?
Many thanks for that Fergus, you are a real gentleman. I have a cd on the Orfeo label with Kubelik conducting the BRSO in Janáček's Sinfonietta and Dvorak's Sixth but that's about it I'm afraid.fergus wrote:For relatively small money I can recommend this one [from a favourite stable of yours too Seán]....Seán wrote: My collection is a wee bit light on Janáček's music. Mackerras -- amongst others -- has recorded a sizable portion of his repertoire I just wouldn't know where to start.
Here is the Amazon UK link Seán if interested

You are welcome Seán. I really like the Sinfonietta - a good place to start.Seán wrote:fergus wrote:Many thanks for that Fergus, you are a real gentleman. Franz Schubert
Symphony No. 8
Symphony No. 9
Concertgebouw Orchestra
Willem Mengelberg conducting.
Recorded in November 1942
The Eighth is lovely and I am currently enjoying the Ninth and so far it is splendid. I cannot help but reflect on the fact that while these great men (and they probably all were men) were creating great art and leaving a glorious legacy for us to enjoy the world was convulsed in major wars, mass terror and slaughter. The best and worst of mankind.

Diepenbrock: CD 1 from this 2 CD set....
This is music that is late Romantic in nature, very melodic and accessible, flows freely and has good structure. There are four very good symphonic works on this CD and the stand out for me is Elektra [a Symphonic Suite].

I hope you like it Fergus. I think that Kuchar is a very good conductor.fergus wrote:
