Quad 405 2 power amp

Post by quadpsaudiotrioc100 »

Does anybody here has a Quad 405 2 power amp or is familiar to its sound? I have one but I noticed that the bass output of the left channel is stronger or i can say its dominant compared to the right channel. I have it connected to the pre out of my Nad 325bee amp with AE Aegis 2 speakers. The sound is sweet but its noticiable that the left channel is slightly dominant. Is this normal from a 20 year old stereo amp? Or does it need to be serviced? Thank you.

Very good chance it needs to be serviced. The only way to tell is to get a lend of another amp, try it in place of the 405, and if the imbalance is gone, then you know where the fault lies. Basically, you will have to rule out the other components in your system. You could just use the NAD for this?

I think Quad service at reasonable rates... but you would need to check. Might end up being cheaper, or at least better value, to get a new amp.

Yes Fran, I compared it with my other amps that's why I noticed the difference. But somehow I am justfying that maybe its a "typical Quad sound" because of its excellent stereo imaging that sometimes one channel is dominant to the other. The mids and highs are balance though and its only the bass on the right channel that is weaker by 1 db. I dunno if there's somebody who's local who can do the service instead of sending this stuff to UK. Any idea Fran? Thanks.

Ah, very good. At least you know what the problem is - thats a good thing!

Don't know of anyone local, but it might be worth giving Cloney's a call - they do sell Quad and may know someone who will do it. I think I remember reading that its fairly common for the Quad amps to need servicing at this age (most electrolytic caps are only rated for 10 years anyway). In fact, this is not limited to Quad amps either.

There are quite a few Quad users over on pinkfishmedia.net - might be worth a look. I'd say give Quad a call too, and just see what they want for doing the job - I think they do a standard service IIRC. There's an online company, parcel2go.com that are pretty competitive for shipping to the UK. About 25 euro for a big heavy package.
