didn't mean order of preference that could be up for discussion
i meant been able to identify each source
would be difficult to have a preference though if you couldn't differentiate between them

I meant preference as in how we like our bass, treble, midrange. How much detail we expect etc. Simply what we look for in a system.

No, we need someone to lock all of us in a room with computers and CD players and quads and box speakers and valves and solid state amps and, most importantly blindfolds and cables (no, not cable ties, it's not that kind of party!) Nobody's allowed leave till we sort this out...

Found ideal stands! A pair of old Sony speakers. Looks a bit precarious but brings the 57's up to nearly 18' from the floor.
Sound is tighter in bass and more delicate detail but I feel it has lost some body. Maybe as if bass has been sucked out.
Maybe if the stands were proper size and heavier it might change the presentation. Will see what Nigel and Pearse think saturday.
Could see Nigel liking it as it is cleaner sounding.

Update changed my mind! Pushed the speakers closer to the walls in the alcoves and prefer that. Bass is back but still enough detail.
I think you will have to revisit Dave! BTW the pair of 63's Pearse was talking about are available in the UK. Price is £1250 but delivery has to be added or collection cost. These were completely done by Quad about 4-5months ago.£1050 spent. Gives you an idea of what is out there.

Carry on with the paper handbags at 300 paces.

Tried uploading a photo but 22mb is too big

Interesting findings Tony on the stands and speaker positioning. I would have thought that pulling the speakers out more would add a bit more ambience and depth to the soundstage, something that would suit classical music where the musicians are arranged a few rows deep or in an arc formation. Probably wouldnt be a noticable with solo singer and accoustic etc. That would give you another presentation to ponder over. You could try dialing the sub up a notch to add back in that missing body or even take some of the absorbtion material out of the corners. All sorts of things you could try.
Certainly if I was setting up a system for the first time in that room I'd have put the speaker out several more feet than where you have them currently. What about either side of the double doors while leaving them open?

I am doing very well at the moment as it is. Putting them in that position would just make it easier for Anne to run them over with the hoover or a big brush. You are right no doubt I can play around with positioning and see what happens. Certainly likely the result at the moment.
A free upgrade!
