What are you listening two?

I have a small number of Boston Baroque / Pearlman performances in my collection and I have not been disappointed by any of them. These readings of the Bach Orchestral Suites proved to be no different; they were very well played [a lovely sounding brass section in particular] and were well paced with the requisite lilt for dance music. The set comes warmly recommended.

I am not familiar with that outfit at all. Thanks for the recommendation.

I have always loved the Jochum, it has that special feeling and true Christmas spirit. The vocal quartet is marvelous, specially Elly Ameling and Hermann Prey.

I absolutely agree Pepe and it was the only version that I owned for a long number of years.

I used to be very fond of these performances but now -- after dwelling at length on the Mackerras / Prague Chamber Orchestra and later Abbado / Orchestra Mozart recordings with lighter forces -- I am not so sure.

I used to be very fond of these performances but now -- after dwelling at length on the Mackerras / Prague Chamber Orchestra and later Abbado / Orchestra Mozart recordings with lighter forces -- I am not so sure.

These things are very subjective but I agree that large forces normally do not do Mozart's music a great deal of justice. I think that the texture gets too heavy and the individual lines tend to get lost. Even after more years than I can remember I still use Hogwood as my go to for Mozart's symphonies for this very reason. Great music though!
