very interesting
hope he gets enough interest to get a batch out

if you seen the build quality of the early ps3 drives you can understand why they give a little trouble
i bought a recon for mine (of ebay) a few yrs back they are pretty much as new
sd card player, modded soekris dac, class a lifepo4 amp or gb class a/b amp, diy open baffle speakers based on project audio mundorf trio 10's

Issue with the early ps3 is use of leadless solder that gets brittle, psu that produces to much heat and fans that are not up to it.
These cause eventually the dreaded YLOD.
