Headless tip

Post by markof »

I use a displayless mac mini as a music server in my main system.
It's controlled from an iPad or laptop using screen sharing, which can often be very slow to update the screen.
Just got an inexpensive solution in the form of a hdmi plug which forces the mac to detect a hi-res display.
No more delay or slow down.

The plug was £21 from amazon.

I believe it may also work with PC devices but I can't confirm this.

That's a great idea. I know that some PC solutions require HDMI handshaking to complete properly or else there's the potential for problems, so this is clever.

hi mark,

I've just gone the same route ( Mac mini ) but mine is power pc, rather than Intel; tell me, do you use Remote (the app)? if so have you worked out a way to get it to display sorted by album artist tag?

Hi Johnny,

Afraid I don't usually use the remote app or indeed iTunes for playback as I like to listen via audirvana or amarra in playlist mode - dragging the album from the iTunes window to the playlist window of the relevant app.

But having said that, I just gave remote a try (IOS 8) and on selecting the artists tab at the bottom of the screen shows the artists listed in a column on the left and the albums related to that specific artist on the right.

You can also generate a playlist of albums sorted by artist on the mac and then use that playlist from the ios device. Looks like this is presented in list mode and not as album covers :-(

Hope this helps.

Mark.

thanks mark,

I had album artist as a handy way to look for, say, all bach recordings, as I find composer to be unwieldy, as you'd end up with Bono in the list!!!!
