PMC GB1s

Post by jaybee »

Has anyone any experience of these speakers?

In an attempt to nip a possible issue re; speaker placement with SWMBO, I'm investigating front-ported speakers....

The issue I have is twofold:

1) My speakers SA1750s are doubly rear ported, and sitting on a suspended wooden floor, which is less solid that would be considered ideal!

2) The chimney breasts in our new house are extremely shallow

This means that the speakers can't be subtly located in a position which is optimal either side of the fire. On the other end of the room, if they are given enough space to breathe, they end up in the wobbliest section of the floor!

Of the top of my head PMC are the only front ported floor-standers I know of (Stand-mounters are a no-no)

I know you dont like their styling but the Audioplan Kontrast V's are ported like the PMCs. They'd be a good bit better than SA's although they'd lean more on the warm side.
Also, all of the B&W 800 series floorstanders are front ported but they command very high prices new.

Thanks Dave....

Unfortunately the current budget (as dictated by the new house!) is limited in that regard!

For me though... warm is good....

I had GB1s for a while in the apartment, and I could never really get them to sing. I'm convinced they are better than they sounded for me, but I could never figure out what was wrong. One thing is that I think they need gobs of power, despite what the specs say. Valves just didn't seem a good match.

Anyone heard monitor audio in the flesh?

They seem to get great "press"

The RX range appear to be front ported.....

I had big Monitor Audio floorstanders as my first system many years ago. They were ok but nothing really special. Could be on the bright side if not partnered carefully. Over on the Wam Monitor Audio dont really have that great a reputation though.

Sorry about the delay, I'm only seeing this now. I used FB1's for a while, and like Diapason, I could never get the performance out of them that I thought they were capable of producing. I used them with Naim and Meridian amps. I tried them in a couple of rooms, one carpeted and one with rugs, but I never got over the impression that they could sound better.

Kudos and Proac have ports on the bottom of the speaker, might be worth considering....Kudos can be very SWMBO friendly, nice finish and not too big....quite a few around s/hand. I *might* be selling a pair of maple C20's in the near future, depending on how my p/ex discussions go with the dealer :-)
