Please note that maximum level for SACD is normally -6dBfs (=0 dB SACD) compared to 0 dBfs for CD rips, so the maximum levels (0dB levels) are different for both.

So I have to turn up the volume a bit or adjust the gain level somewhere during ripping or converting/encapsulating. Normally I leave the volume untouched which will give a -6dB difference in level.

Cheers

Would be great to use this unique chance to do head to head comparison of new vs old firmware on two of our MA-1 side by side to see how different the FW really is. Should be interesting as I assume most people would just do update and comment afterwards living some space for suggestion and shakey sound memory.

The current newest driver is 2.20. Tony let me know your email and I can send you the file if you want.

Good idea Seb, should be able to do a quick swap of usb and balanced cables into the primare and be playing alternately in seconds hopefully.
It will be the week after next before I am back in Dublin proper but will be in contact before then.
Cheers, Pearse.
Great. Should be even easier than that as I hope to have two identical sets of XLRs by then ... plus the week you mentioned I will be off work so plenty of time to do some testing.

It is under Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\JPLAY key and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\JPLAY and is called clock. It has values of
- 0 for 0.5 ms
- 1 for 1.0 ms
- 2 for 10 ms

I use 2 and set the TimerResolution (= what jplay calls clock) to 2.0 ms myself.

Awaiting my dac to arrive and doing some research on dsd and was wondering if you guys can answer a couple of questions for me or point me in the right direction.

I have a couple of isos and deciding which file I should convert to, dsf or dff. I think dsf keeps the metadata from the iso?

Choosing between the players jriver, jplay or foobar which is simplest and do anyone of them have a feature or addon that I can control from my ipad?

My dac hasn't arrived yet and I think I need a usb a-b cable. I may have one lying around somewhere but I remember reading somewhere here that usb cabe does make a difference and saw Midlandaudiox are selling one at a reduced price over in another forum and would like to know if it is sufficient or should I go higher to hear a difference?

thats not a good cable ive had one here for a while
try this http://www.ebay.ie/itm/1m-8-Core-Pure-S ... 2ec983fcd7

i havent used it but ive used simialar components with good effect
i would also recommend getting them to make one as short as is practical for you

Can I ask where the advantage of DSD lies when the source material has been recorded in 24/192 fx? Would it not be better playing it back at its original format? Sorry if this is a noob question... ;)

Didn't see any advantage in DSD wasn't on the radar so didn't take it as an option. You will have to hear it and make a judgement Claus. Ken has the Hugo and he hears the improvements / I thought so too when I heard it in his place.
The technical reason I would only be guessing but had a session last night with Fryderyk and some of the usual suspects and we had a bit of discussion around DSD. The bit I picked up on was how it is transmitting and also the fact it is at higher rates. It is transmitted as one file afaik.
Please correct me somebody if I am way off base. Heard it in my own system using the Meitner and John and myself both identified differences. It is a question of whether you value or notice what it brings. For me I think on any good comparable recordings that I have heard it I prefer DSD.

Tony, I think what we talked about was the simplicity of the filtering (all through the recording chain) maybe being beneficial to the sound of DSD? We talked about other DACs that also pay attention to the digital reconstruction filters & they all seem to benefit from this - Chord Hugo & some others even when playing PCM. So the Meitner converting PCM internally to DSD may just be benefitting because there is no reconstruction filter needed on the output - I don't know?
