A few weeks ago, I couldn't play any new avx version, but something happened, so problem's gone. I have updated mqnload with the latest version, nothing else was done on my computer. I tried some of the latest versions and they all work. I am playing by 4.82 256 128 nop right now. I have no idea what really happened, but I would try the newest version of mqnload, whoever uses it.

"saw in the naim huggy thread that people were complaining about digital fatigue, obviously haven't tried mqn, think they were using mac/amarra
by Gordon"

They are still in shock, how an "ugly" little box, battery powered, can beat way more expensive systems...lol.
I tried a few times to let people know about mqn, but they love their mac's almost as much as Naim is loved.

Dan , you may continue to lose sleep for quite some time . But with some troubleshooting and some luck you may get to doze for a bit. Thing is the sleep deprivation will at some point yield rewards.

The basics of the original MQN document still apply. Briefly , you need four files. the batch file , the control file , the play file, the paste file all appropiately renamed as per the document

Some things to try if there is a hitch.

Wipe out the root MQN folder and do a cold reboot and start from scratch. Place the root MQN file in the C drive

Go into the properties menu for the control.exe and tick run as admin. Sometimes running as win7 compatability works.

Go into the properties menu for the play file and do the same.

For a given play file try different control files, for some reason control 1.6 is reliable in my system but 3.61 is temperamental.

There are probably other work arounds I don't know of , since I can't get avx in the latest play files to work either. C'est la vie!

Might be worth posting your OS, motherboard, cpu etc in case someone has something in common with your hardware/software

ASUS P8Z77 - V - DELUXE Motherboard.
Intel 3770 CPU (non K).
8GB of Kingston Hyper X PC2000 DDR 3 - 4 x 2GB modules.
Corsair AX860i PSU.
Sandisk Extreme 128GB SSD
Windows 8.1 Pro x64 (no patches, no activation, no updates)

Furutech USB Cable to Asus Xonar Essence One (Muses Op Amps)

My Audio System is Kef XQ 40 Speakers with a Job 225 Power Amp.

I plan on rebuilding to the latest release of Windows 8.1 Pro (AIO) and see if I have better success with this.

All the SSE2 versions of MQN seem to run without issue.

In my experience on 2012R2 don't set 'Run as Administrator' on mqnplay.

On Win 8.1 do put it on for mqnplay, but if it fails try also without.

For both do set it on mqncontrol.

What I notice sometimes when it happens to me suddenly (yest it does happen with me too, just out of the blue), is to play an sse version and then go back to avx again. No guarantee but with me it does help, sometimes.

@Gordon
Hope to try the latest releases tonight. But I did not find 4.82 lacking bass, but that's just me. More bass will be a challenge to control again and keep it insightfull, detailed and with clarity which all were in good balance with 4.81 256 avax128 nop.

Cheers

4.82 256 128 nop is better. stable treble.

cannot seem to enjoy treble of
4.87, 4.85, 4.83

4.82 256 sse2 64 nop -> ok.

4.8x vs 4.7x...
4.74 > 4.82
4.82 is richer but texture is less.

4.74 vs 4.81
4.81 won't play

Got avx working ! Can't believe it.

Recap I have win server 2012 R2

On each of these files , mqncontrol , mqnplay , and paste right click and and run the "trobleshoot compatability" option.

Run this troubleshooter at least twice for each file, or ,at least until you achieve two settings successfully.

Changing only run as the administrator was not enough .

The two settings which have to be achieved are : "run as administrator " and "win 8 compatabilty".

to achieve win 8 compatability the troubleshooter will ask in which program each of the files ran successfully select win8

the troubleshooter will show on screen which settings have been applied.

files I'm running in avx are control 1.6 and play 4.82 256 avx 128 nop .

Beautiful analog kind of sound

Gordon, are you compiling these newer releases for AVX2 (Haswell) as opposed to AVX which my Ivy Bridge CPU only supports?

I cannot get any AVX version to run past 4.08, despite me rebuilding a AIO x64 Windows 8.1 Pro with Administrator account enabled and used for playback.

Thanks once again for your gifts to humanity in the form of music playback software.
