what mouse you got?

EDIT
wait a sec. harsh treble?
don't think so. did you plug in the mouse into a "correct" usb port?

i tested each usb port too. some usb controller shares irq with your audio devices.

EDIT2
(maybe i should try a ps2 port)
Struggling for a reply on that one. You could always try mouseless?

you ought to get 3 non optical mice and see how they run, perhaps cut off their leads with a sharp knife
your wife might not like them, but you won't have heard anything like it in your life

I find the treble a bit squeeky

i finally get you! i have a gaming mouse pad. it stabilizes the mouse sensitivity.

if i use that mouse on a wooden surface, yes, treble sounds a little out of control.

audiophile mouse pad hahaha

EDIT

tested difference surfaces. the smoother/more accurate is the micro-movement of the mouse pointer, the better is the treble.

find a piece of plastic, a little soft, black, sticky, sounds best, as though i have unplugged the mouse.
