No idea if it was certified. There was no indication in the embedded processor (RX side) that any dropped data or retranmission of packets occured. So it did its job in that regard. Dont know what the gauge of cable was but it was a bit on the thin side. It did illustrate that a 'working' USB cable had other side affects that normally wouldnt have been an issue in the majority of non-audio applications.jkeny wrote:PS, I resume this USB cable was USB certified & transmitted digital audio accurately?

Yea, I just wanted you to say it again so that others (who might look at this thread ) will not miss this point :)DaveF wrote:No idea if it was certified. But John convincing those guys would mean proving the cable is not 'broken'. It would have to be measured etc etc.
A battle that is not worthwhile. Horse to water rule applies.
Would be with Dave and sure i think you believe the same everything matters be it power, cables software etc. The measurement of audible improvement is the part that is impossible to assess. No issue for a lot of the people here as we know each other and there is a trust in the opinions and also an opportunity to come and listen.
Meridian proved well made components make a difference. A dig into the history of Meridian confirms they are top notch in their approach to manufacture.

Re: Build a dedicated Audio PC
Sure but this is an example of a USB cabe that looks like it pasess digital data without error but it also passes some other signal/distortion/noise that has an effect on the receiving device, be it a laser control board or an audio device. I know the people who carry the ideologies you speak of would say that "a properly designed" device should not be affected but they are stuck in an ideology which denies real world considerations.tony wrote:But John convincing those guys would mean proving the cable is not 'broken'. Well, yes & no. The blanket statement "everything matters" is too imprecise & all encompassing & opens the door to all sorts of crazy/zany "tweaks". Crazy/zany tweaks always were always part of this hobby but once digital audio became predominant in this hobby it seems that for some people, it shifted the focus away from actually listening & analysing what you hear (with checks & balances) to believing in mathematical theorems & proofs.Would be with Dave and sure i think you believe the same everything matters be it power, cables software etc. The measurement of audible improvement is the part that is impossible to assess. Before digital audio I wonder if these people would have been involved in the hobby at all or whether they would have just been happy listeners to their Bush record players :). Nothing wrong with that (i'm not being snobby - I owned & enjoyed a bush record player in my youth) but what we seem to regularly encounter now is the equivalent of these types butting in on the honest efforts of those interested in better sound, telling them that a Bush player sounds as good as any other turntable.
Sure & they were not cheap, either - certainly cost more than a Bush :)Meridian proved well made components make a difference. A dig into the history of Meridian confirms they are top notch in their approach to manufacture.

As usual I am late ;)
Thank you Tony for having us the other afternoon. It was was very interesting one.
If I could get full and lush sounding tonality of Lampi mixed with resolution and control of DP-1 I think it would be marriage made in heaven. But there are many more levels and variations of Lampi to explore it is just a bit shame that pricing is quite steep. And no discount for fellow country men from Poland. That is outrageous ! ;)
What I have noticed for the very first time with Lampi was the limited dynamic swings in compare to SS Dacs on test. But no matter that and a bit loose bottom end, I have still always thoroughly enjoyed this dac when I have listened to it at Maciej place and I think it was a very good match in terms of sound signature for Tony's Quads. I will certenley be asking Maciej to bring it along next time he will be coming my way as it will be very interesting to hear what it can bring to the table in my system.
But as mentioned previously no matter the time spent it was still not enough to test it all in all possible combinations and with enough attention to details.
Tony was mentioning that Nige's PC was not going through Regenerator? I think it would make a huge difference of at least same calibre as it did to Meridian bringing it to another level. At least this is what the regenerator does to my PC in my place.
Cheers,
seb

Taking in account my very limited experience with different DACs Lampi in some aspects (aspect to be precise - tonal richness, or darker sounding?) is one of a kind so far IMHO.tony wrote:Have you not just described the Meitner?

Has Maciej blown up his mini? No sign of him since the meet.Maybe he has gone crazy and sent the Lampy back for upgrade already?
