On the BBB there is a master clock signal available that could be used for clockless DAC-boards to work in a synchronised way.

The DIYINHK board can have a local oscillator mounted to act as a clock for the DAC chip in an asynchronised way and you could also use an external masterclock card for that purpose.

I also read in the BBB SRM that the clock pins on the processor are both input and output, and that would open up the option to use a separate masterclock board to synchronise both the BBB and the DAC from the same external source, so with a better clock and/ or a different oscillator frequency than is mounted on the BBB itself. The oscillator on the BBB can be switched off from software.

So plenty of options to try out.
BTW. I ordered two DAC boards from DIYINHK, where one is modified to carry an onboard oscillator and the other is unmodified.

They shipped this morning, so now sit and wait when they will be delivered. Which gives me time to think about the PSU for the boards.

i can see an array of i2s configurations appearing
when do you expect the BBB
think diyinhk delivery takes about 2 weeks
they also have 3.3v/5v low noise regulators in stock too
ive got one here somewhere ill try that at some stage
The BBB is still said to available from february 24th. If so should arrive within 1 or 2 days from shipping.

I also ordered a low noise 5V/3.3V regulator from DIYINHK, as it is the fastest way for me to have good quality regulator available.
I still have some PCB's for even better quality linear regulators, but just haven't got time now to get round to it. Besides that I don't have all components yet.

Cheers

Those are pulled directly from Russ Whites first post.
Yes, I saw that & when I also read the HiFiberry stuff - it had different coding in Modules - all very confusing as it's just generic I2S that's being transmitted from the RPi
In terms of why this stuff makes a difference I would guess these refer to resource libraries in the Linux repositories. You'd need to get an answer from the Volumio/Raspbian gurus, I think.
Sure, however but I don't like blindly following recipes when they don't seem logical
Maybe the "-" vs "_" is a Putty presentation thing...

Mark
No, I'm talking about Russ's code - he uses underscores in every line in Modules except the pcm1794a line
Anyway, that did it - I have sound - don't use underscores in that line!

Now I have to re-enable some sort of volume mixing as I'm just listening through headphones directly out from my DAC chip

Sorry if I got the wrong end of the stick - I am on a long conference call this morning, so trying to multitask here!

Glad you have sound at last. I look forward to your report on that.

No problem, Mark - I was more pointing it out for others that follow to save them some time/frustration

Anyway, via headphones (with software vol control - not ideal, I know) sound is very good - an ease & flow to it that is immediately evident, maybe some better texture too - it all seems less forced, less etched than MQN/JPL - have yet to decide if it is rounding off some of the leading edges of notes or whether it is more correct sounding. For instance on the Oscar Peterson Trio reference track we use "You Look Good to Me", the bass player's scatting? along with his playing sounds more realistic, the percussion elements on that track seem less etched & as a result more realistic, I think.

But all this is via headphone, not my normal listening mode. Have to listen to this on my main system for soundstage, etc.
But It certainly sounds different to most CA based audio I've heard.

Ah, I need a wifi module for the RPi to be able to control it for use on my main system - it's not near a LAN connection.
So my auditioning is curtailed for the moment.

Hi John

Glad you have it going anyway.

I have just transplanted in the linear psu for the RPi. Needs more listening but it seems to have provides a little further improvement in separation and tone. Acoustic guitar sounds more nylonesque (when appropriate!) for instance. Backing vocals seem to more clearly occupy their own space in the mix.

Certainly not a retrograde step.

This nano usb wifi dongle works a treat btw - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Wireless-USB- ... 27d4c73952

Yea, I thought it might provide a lift in SQ - just didn't know how much
