Friend looking for cheap valve based integrated

Post by HiFiFan »

I have a friend in Ireland who is looking at getting into audio and has asked me for recommendations on a decent but cheap integrated valve based amp. This is not something I have any knowledge about or experience with. He is thinking a few hundred Euro which to me means used and/or entirely Chinese which could be iffy.

If anyone has any recommendations I’d appreciated hearing them
Thanks
James

How much are those new Icon Audio amps in Cloney? In the hundreds I think, but maybe still too dear. An Audio Innovations would be a good choice if you could find one. The series 700 would probably be cheaper than the series 500. Hmmm, I'll try to think of more options.

Thanks. I checked on the Cloney site but didn't see Icon Audio, was this new or used? Just FTI - Icon Audio also came up as a recommendation from a general search I did.

What sites do people used her for UK/IRL used audio (other that Cloney's used section which I am aware of)? I seem to remember seeing some links in the past but can't remember the sites.

Icon audio are new and Cloneys do stock them.

adverts.ie or donedeal.ie are two options, or the classifieds here, although not that many valve integrateds come up there.

Hifi wigwam has a good Classifieds section with both dealers and private sellers. That might be worth a look. As Fran says, the Icon Audio amps are new, but keenly priced for the quality on offer. I just can't remember how keenly!

I think the stereo 20 pp is either 899 or 799
Brass Bands are all very well in their place -
outdoors and several miles away....

Noticed this in wigwam today. The guy is in Dundalk. Well regarded amp by Guy Sergeant. Might suit your friend? Sure there is some negotiation on price.

I was out talking to Ivan in Cloney yesterday and noticed that he had a Jadis Orchestra on the shelf. He had just taken it in that afternoon as a trade-in.

I am of course biased having had Jadis valves for some time now - but the Orchestra does make some beautiful tube sounds and Jadis build quality is top notch. Just in case your friend is still on the look out....
