Can I terminate Cat5?

Post by jaybee »

So all you solder-junkies....

Am I going to be able to terminate all the cat5 cables my f%<%>g electrician has left as bare wire in the "distribution" cupboard.....

I'm fairly handy, but would obviously require the necessary crimper tool..., is it very trick though, or do the untwisted pairs line up easily enough?

Also, should I be looking for some manner of panel?

Thanks!

JB

ITs easy enough. You need an RJ45 crimping tool, and its really, really useful to also get yourself a lan tester.

and some RJ45 plugs

and this is how the plugs are wired:

Allow plenty of time and practise on a waste bit first.

Fran has all the detail which is great. I have gone through the same process and need to do the crimping work etc at some point.Keep putting it off. Depending how dense your wiring system is a patch panel and a network switch are worthwhile and don't cost the earth.
You might be better off tracing everything and labeling it and get a good electrician or phone tech to do the connections in an hour.
It could be money well spent.

I think I may just camp outside the electricians house until he finishes so....!!

At 40 odd quid for the tool, I'd say getting a pro if the above action fails would be worthwhile!

are cpc the best place to get a patch panel?
