I'm sat here now listening to Richmond Fontaine - The Fitzgerald.
An album that I know very well. It's never sounded so good.
Having been through too many system swing arounds over the last couple of years I possibly have the most enjoyable sound I've ever had in my home.
A 15 year old Sony DVD player into a Centrance DAC Mini into a Densen D10 amp into a pair of EIST Dove prototypes.
The Densen is a solid state, class A, zero negative feedback job that is as close as makes no difference to a gorgeous 300b SET amp that I had. But with extra power.
speaker and inter wires are all homemade silver on copper and the power cables are long homemade screened yokes.
TT's are all out of action 'cos of space issues and unfinished modifications.
This equipment, relatively modest, combined with a distinct lack of desire for more at the moment is putting out the most enjoyable sounds.

That is what it's all about Gerry. Great to just enjoy the music. To be fair a lot of us have just done something similar to yourself with a lot of changes over a reasonably short period of time. With the pc a lot of basic tweaks can be done cheaply while still using the guts of your gear. Unfortunately with the other components that option aint there it becomes a box shifting arrangement to try and identify the sound you want.

I used my ZEN x-fi3* and my pair of Superlux HD 681^ to play music stored as FLAC. Sounded great, lovely and clear. Exactly the reason I have a hi-fi system in fact.

* Derek suggested I get a ZEN when I went looking for a portable FLAC player.

I get that OK. And it looks like you are all enjoying the PC audio journey. Terrific.
I look forward to the day that it's an option to guys like me who wouldn't dream of, or have the time to start hacking into PC's.
I have heard what ye are doing, a while ago, and it sounded really, really impressive.

I have worked with Macs in the job for years and years and always preferred Mac over PC. Intuitive, creative software was designed for Mac, and it was a standard in our industry.
So naturally I opted for a Mac mini for computer audio. With Bit Perfect software app and iTunes it's been grand.
Now the mac mini has been seconded at home because of a queue the family iMac .

So let me know when the PC thing is a simple fit and forget.

And it's not about the money.
What I was getting at above, unclearly, is that right now I have a terrific situation where the music matters. Not the kit.
Probably won't last.

BTW the Densen was a happy accident. A friend bought it from Ivan Cloney and hasn't really bothered with it. So it's with me for minding !

Interesting post Gerry, tell me... which intel chip did you use to post that? Any idea how much RAM was needed?

Tayto is my preferred chip and RAM puts me to REM sleep.
I had a lengthy reply, about where I'm currently at with my HiFi and music.
But my smartphone isn't too feeling clever tonight.
So it's gone.
I'll go there though.
